Productivity and Seasonality Drive Total Soil Respiration in Semi-Arid Juniper Woodlands (Juniperus thurifera L., Southern Spain)

چکیده

We analyzed the relationship between forest productivity (joint effect of maturity and soil quality) total respiration (µmol CO2 m−2 s−1) in semi-arid juniper woodlands (young growing abandoned farmlands with deeper soils, mature lithic soils), investigated seasonal variation efflux as a function temperature water content. measured from twelve cylinders over three-year period using LI-6400 equipment. The results show that, more productive site woodland), was higher due to greater respiration, mainly driest periods. Soil followed trend, being spring decreasing cold In both especially older forest, rates were low (<2.5 for Q10), typical slow-growing species. controlled by without drought temperate-warm season, whereas showed sensitivity content periods when edaphic humidity (but only productive, young which seemed better adaptation drought), under high moisture (soil > 25%) woodlands, coinciding warm temperatures spring. This also corresponded highest recorded woodlands. accumulation organic C seems be important maintain elevated summer, Thus, apart microclimatic conditions, factors related regulate respiratory activity.

Genetic Diversity and Differentiation of Juniperus thurifera in Spain and Morocco as Determined by SSR

Juniperus thurifera L. is an important tree endemic to the western Mediterranean basin that it is able to grow in semi-arid climates. It nowadays exhibits a disjunct distribution pattern, occurring in North Africa, Spain, France and the Italian Alps. The Strait of Gibraltar has acted as an efficient barrier against gene flow between African and European populations, which are considered differe...

Ecology and functional roles of biological soil crusts in semi-arid ecosystems of Spain.

Biological soil crusts (BSCs), composed of lichens, cyanobacteria, mosses, liverworts and microorganisms, are key biotic components of arid and semi-arid ecosystems worldwide. Despite they are widespread in Spain, these organisms have been historically understudied in this country. This trend is beginning to change as a recent wave of research has been identifying BSCs as a model ecological sys...

Interannual variation in seasonal drivers of soil respiration in a semi-arid Rocky Mountain meadow

Semi-arid ecosystems with annual moisture inputs dominated by snowmelt cover much of the western United States, and a better understanding of their seasonal drivers of soil respiration is needed to predict consequences of climatic change on soil CO2 efflux. We assessed the relative importance of temperature, moisture, and plant phenology on soil respiration during seasonal shifts between cold, ...

Precipitation Regime Shift Enhanced the Rain Pulse Effect on Soil Respiration in a Semi-Arid Steppe

The effect of resource pulses, such as rainfall events, on soil respiration plays an important role in controlling grassland carbon balance, but how shifts in long-term precipitation regime regulate rain pulse effect on soil respiration is still unclear. We first quantified the influence of rainfall event on soil respiration based on a two-year (2006 and 2009) continuously measured soil respira...

Holocene geochemical footprint from Semi-arid alpine wetlands in southern Spain

Here we provide the geochemical dataset that our research group has collected after 10 years of investigation in the Sierra Nevada National Park in southern Spain. These data come from Holocene sedimentary records from four alpine sites (ranging from ∼2500 to ∼3000 masl): two peatlands and two shallow lakes. Different kinds of organic and inorganic analyses have been conducted. The organic matt...
